Filming in Southern New Zealand

Southern New Zealand encompasses spectacular locations ranging from fantastic mountains - Milford Sound's Mitre Peak, the Southern Alps and The Remarkables, to New Zealand's deepest lakes - Hauroko, Wakatipu, Wanaka, Hawea, Te Anau and Manapouri; Fiords and wild bush-clad coastlines bordering the Pacific Ocean, the Tasman Sea and Foveaux Strait; agricultural farmland; grassy slopes; industrial mill and coal-mining towns; alpine passes and rivers; and architecture ranging from gold-mining cottages through 19th century stone buildings to Art Deco and contemporary award-winning wineries and homes. Film Queenstown is based in the adrenalin capital of the world and home of bungy-jumping, Queenstown. It's in south-west New Zealand and the film office represents the interests of the screen production industry in Queenstown Lakes, Central Otago, Waitaki, Clutha and Southland. Film Queenstown works closely with Film Dunedin, a city of 150,000 on the east coast of southern New Zealand. We recognize that geographical boundaries are of little interest to film, TV and TVC creators and happily work together to ensure a smooth experience of filming in southern New Zealand.

A good selection of equipment locally includes digital on-line suites; lighting and grip equipment hire; digital FX; camera hire and a network of contacts that will ensure any other equipment needed is available within hours.

The southern part of New Zealand is the home to many experienced crew - used to working on feature films, television, TVCs, music videos, stills … the lot. Professional art departments, camera and production crew live and work around the region. See our Industry Directory for contact details.

As the region is geared up for tourism, accommodation ranges from exclusive luxury lodges ranked in the world's top 10, to five star hotels, motels, backpacker lodges and bed & breakfast farmstays.

An international airport in Queenstown links up with direct flights to New Zealand international hubs in Christchurch and Auckland, and another domestic airport in Invercargill. Queenstown Airport boasts extensive helicopter and private jet facilities and local pilots are very familiar with the particular needs of the screen production industry.

Major shipping ports are located at Bluff (Southland) and Port Chalmers (Dunedin) and the road network is extensive and well-maintained. Non-sealed character rural roads are also available.
